Reigniting Your Radiance in Midlife

Midlife can be an enormous transitional time in a woman’s life.

Midlife can arrive with a wild concoction of physical, emotional, mental & existential changes.

And sometimes all at the same time.

Midlife coincides with a woman experiencing perimenopause or menopause. She’s been the young maiden of her youth. She’s been either a mother or a creator of sorts in her adult life & she’s not quite the crone yet. If women are living longer, statistically woman aged 50+ are expected to live approximately another 30 years or more, then there’s still so much living to do. If she has children, they might be at a stage where they are more independent or leaving home. Intimate relationships/marriages are often reassessed. Relationships might be ending; some beginning. She may change careers at this stage in her life. Be the caretaker of ageing parents. Be downsizing or moving countries. All of this is enough to make a woman want to have a lie down. For a year. At least.

In midlife everything in life is up for self- examination.

Midlife can be a time of great reckoning and a time of choosing to create a whole new narrative in a woman’s life. She might be asking herself: “How do I want to show up for myself in my life?” & “What do I really want?” It’s not uncommon during midlife for a woman to feel a low grade irritation at so many things, including herself, as she has more time to look at herself and tap into her own feelings, desires and dreams. There might be a sense of time passing her by, and at the same time feeling the urge to live life fully & authentically. It’s an opportunity to show up as a leader of her own truth, whatever that truth may be.

The Chinese have a word to describe menopause - the Second Spring. It’s as if she gets a second chance to review all the parts of her first Spring - her youth, and reflect on her younger years in a different light. She can revisit the things that lit her up and made her truly happy. And she can listen, become curious & see what truly lights her up now.

The midlife woman is not alone in these feelings…

These changes can be confusing & confronting. But can also bring about clarity & profound transformation.

A few bits of interesting & useful information to know

• Worldwide every year approximately 1 billion women are either in perimenopause or menopause.

• In the 1930s menopause was seen as a “deficiency disease”

• Synthetic oestrogen was developed in the 1930s

• In the 1970s menopause was formally medicalised.

• Today up to 30-40% of GP visits in Australia are from perimenopausal and menopausal women.

Menopause has been around since women existed, however it wasn’t until 1978 that the first international menopause society was formed.

This medicalisation & stigma surrounding midlife has left many women feeling demeaned, unappreciated, belittled & unseen. An afterthought.

It’s no wonder that collectively the midlife woman feels a little lacklustre. Like she’s lost her spark.

Midlife is an opportunity to reclaim, reinvent, reframe, rejoice & redesign a whole new way of being

The truth is her inner spark has never left her. It’s just been lost in a haze of unpredictable menstrual cycles, hot flushes, nightsweats, brainfog, irritability, insomnia & anxiety on top of the busyness of taking care of family, finances, career, running a household & fulfilling social and community responsibilities. It may have felt like it’s dormant but in actuality her spark, her “inner pilot light” has been humming on low.

Her inner spark is innate.

She just needs to feel like it might be possible for her to tune into her inner radiance and see where it guides her.

Perimenopause & menopause are normal physiological transitions.

They are rites of passage.
